Artist : Deb Plastid - Sing in the Spring
Fabric is what I work with, spring is where my heart lives. How to make a
quilt? Think of how winter becomes spring, all art in fact…there is the germ
of an image; hiding, waiting, like the germ of a seed in the ground under
layers of snow.
Working with Sheree Fitch has been an exciting opportunity; a celebration
really. Her verse is the spark that cracks open the seed. My work is to create,
magnify, magicify, whimsy-fy her words with emotion, colour and texture. In
this is the whirl of worldly possibility. I ask of the verse, what will you be?
Making the quilts? I have an image and I struggle to bring it to life. It is
cutting and piecing, not quite knowing what will crystallize. It is adding and
taking away, dyeing, painting, layering, collage, embellishing, and stitching,
trusting that this will work with that. The same kind of trust we have that a
small black and white seed will emerge and grow into a glorious tall
sunflower. Bit by bit, piece by piece.
Above all the fabric decides. I create with my hands in the hopes that my art
will touch a heart; make someone smile.
