Artists - Leah Benetti and Inga Girčytė

After being in different places for 2.5 years through the pandemic, two artists Inga Girčytė and Leah Benetti met at the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia and discovered that their recent creative endeavours had been speaking the same language. The decision to apply for a show came about from the need for that mutual space, and to further experiment with how their themes may fit together. Benetti’s experimentation with clay slabs began shortly after the loss of a dear friend, and her sgraffito carvings took on a more improvisational character as she carved scenes from powerful memories to honour that relationship. Gircyte’s material explorations question her reality and identity, and offer her freedom, because of the simplicity of their shapes, and without stuffy conceptual formalities. Her unique combinations of shape and texture, connect and transport the viewer into new types of space.
